Edward Smith Stanley,
the 12th Earl of Derby was the pioneer of these two Classics. In 1779 he
created the one and a half mile race for fillies that he named The Oaks
after his estate.
The Derby was created a year later for colts, with the title The Derby
been decided upon by the flip of a coin.
